Cecilia Brunson Projects art gallery

New project and reference room
Bermondsey, London

Housed in a converted print house off Bermondsey Street in South London, Cecilia Brunson Projects is an art gallery committed to increasing the visibility and understanding of Latin American artists and their role in global art movements. Erbar Mattes was commissioned to design a series of spaces to support the main gallery and create a new Project and Reference Room for Latin American art.

The project transforms a dark and never completed ancillary storage area into a bright top-lit space by introducing a large rectangular walk-on glass skylight within the existing concrete roof structure. Now flooded with daylight, the new gallery space enables dual functionality as independent research room and for the display of art contiguous to the main show. Inbuilt joinery elements structure the space and provide storage for works on paper, publications, art works and equipment. New wall linings provide a neutral backdrop for the display of art, while the raw utilitarian nature of the original construction remains evident through the exposed concrete ceiling structure.

The project space has been completed in 2019.
